EnviroScape

  What is it?

It is a scale version of a community that incorporates factories, golf courses, housing developments, construction
sites, farms,  and  forests.  The EnviroScape is a hands-on learning tool that connects what we do on land to

what happens in our rivers, our lakes, our oceans and even our groundwater.   Simply put--the EnviroScape
is a visual demonstration of water pollution and ways to prevent it.  This display is 8" high by 2.5' wide  by 2' deep.

  How does it work?

We all live in a watershed with water pollution coming from many sources.  With the use of kool-aide mix, cocoa
powder, soy sauce, and water, we are able to show erosion/sedimentation and pollution from the various sites
located on our model.  We can demonstrate soil being washed off construction sites and farms, fertilizers being
swept off golf courses, oils being fed into our water systems, and what may  happen with clear-cutting of forests

or even after a forest fire.

  Conclusions?

We show students that we are all part of the problem of pollution and that we can all be part of the solution too. At
the end of the demonstration, students are asked if the water in the model's reservoir is something they would
like to drink?   I think we know that answer!!
